CAUTION:

  • The engine assembly with transaxle is very heavy. Be sure to follow the procedure described in the repair manual, or the engine lifter may suddenly drop or the engine assembly with transaxle may fall off the engine lifter.

  • To prevent burns, do not touch the engine, exhaust manifold or other high temperature components while the engine is hot.

1. RECOVER REFRIGERANT FROM REFRIGERATION SYSTEM

3. PRECAUTION

NOTICE:

After turning the engine switch off, waiting time may be required before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Therefore, make sure to read the disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal notices before proceeding with work.

4. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

5. ALIGN FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

7. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL OPENING EXTENSION PAD LH

(a) Remove the 2 screws and front wheel opening extension pad LH from the No. 3 engine under cover.

8. REMOVE NO. 3 ENGINE UNDER COVER

(a) Remove the 5 bolts, 2 screws, 2 clips and No. 3 engine under cover from the vehicle body.

9. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL OPENING EXTENSION PAD RH

(a) Remove the 2 screws and front wheel opening extension pad RH from the No. 1 engine under cover.

10. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER

(a) Remove the 3 bolts, 2 screws, clip and No. 1 engine under cover from the vehicle body.

11. REMOVE FRONT LOWER BUMPER ABSORBER

(a) Remove the 4 screws and 2 clips, and disengage the 2 claws to remove the front lower bumper absorber from the vehicle body.

13. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER

(a) Remove the 2 bolts, 2 screws, clip and No. 2 engine under cover from the front frame assembly.

14. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR COVER LH

15. REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL LH

(a) Remove the 2 bolts, clip and front fender apron seal LH from the vehicle body.

16. REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH

(a) Remove the 2 bolts, clip and front fender apron seal RH from the vehicle body.

17. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT

19. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL

20. REMOVE INLET AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY

21. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER HOSE

22. REMOVE AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the air cleaner filter element sub-assembly from the air cleaner case sub-assembly.

23. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the 2 bolts and air cleaner case sub-assembly from the engine mounting insulator LH and air cleaner bracket.

24. REMOVE AIR CLEANER BRACKET

(a) Disengage the clamp.

(b) Remove the 2 bolts and air cleaner bracket from the engine mounting insulator LH.

25. REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Hold the rear of the V-bank cover sub-assembly and raise it to disengage the 2 rear clips.

(b) Raise the V-bank cover sub-assembly to disengage the 2 front clips and remove the V-bank cover sub-assembly.

NOTICE:

Attempting to disengage both front and rear clips at the same time may cause the V-bank cover sub-assembly to break.

26. REMOVE ECM

27. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE

HINT:

After disconnecting the wire harness, secure it with tape or equivalent to keep it out of the way.

(a) Remove the No. 1 relay block cover from the engine room relay block assembly.

(b) Disconnect the 3 connectors from the engine room relay block assembly.

(c) Remove the nut from the engine room relay block assembly.

(d) Remove the bolt and disconnect the engine wire from the vehicle body.

(e) Disengage the clamp from the engine room relay block assembly.

(f) Remove the 2 nuts from the engine mounting insulator LH and vehicle body.

(g) Using a screwdriver, disengage the claw and disconnect the engine wire from the engine room relay block assembly.

(h) Disengage the clamp and disconnect the engine wire from the engine mounting insulator LH.

(i) Remove the nut and disconnect the engine room main wire with engine wire from the positive (+) battery terminal.

(j) Disengage the 2 claws to disconnect the engine room main wire from the engine wire.

(k) Disengage the clamp and disconnect the engine wire from the vehicle body.

(l) Remove the bolt and disconnect the No. 2 earth wire from the bracket.

28. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY

29. DISCONNECT FUEL VAPOR FEED HOSE ASSEMBLY

(a) Slide the clip and disconnect the fuel vapor feed hose assembly from the No. 1 vacuum switching valve.

30. DISCONNECT NO. 1 FUEL HOSE

(a) Remove the No. 2 fuel pipe clamp from the fuel tube connector.

(b) Disconnect the No. 2 fuel tube sub-assembly (for Direct Injection).

(1) Disconnect the No. 2 fuel tube sub-assembly from the fuel pipe.

(c) Disconnect the fuel tube sub-assembly (for Port Injection).

(1) Disconnect the fuel tube sub-assembly from the fuel pipe.

31. DISCONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE

(a) Slide the clip and disconnect the No. 1 radiator hose from the water outlet.

(b) Separate the No. 1 radiator hose from the radiator pipe clamp.

32. DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE

33. DISCONNECT INLET HEATER WATER HOSE

(a) Disengage the clamp.

(b) Slide the clip and disconnect the inlet heater water hose from the water outlet.

34. DISCONNECT OUTLET HEATER WATER HOSE

(a) Slide the clip and disconnect the outlet heater water hose from the water inlet pipe.

35. DISCONNECT UNION TO CHECK VALVE HOSE

36. DISCONNECT NO. 1 TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLY

37. SEPARATE NO. 1 TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLY

38. DISCONNECT DISCHARGE HOSE SUB-ASSEMBLY

40. REMOVE EXHAUST MANIFOLD

41. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

46. REMOVE ENGINE ASSEMBLY WITH TRANSAXLE

(a) Place height adjustment attachments and plate lift attachments, set an engine lifter underneath the engine assembly with transaxle.

NOTICE:

  • Using height adjustment attachments and plate lift attachments, keep the engine assembly with transaxle level.
  • Do not perform any procedures while the engine assembly is suspended because doing so may cause the engine assembly to drop, resulting in injury. However, the engine assembly needs to be suspended when it is installed to or removed from an engine stand.
  • To prevent the engine assembly from unexpectedly moving, securely support the engine assembly until it is secured to an engine stand.

(b) Remove the bolt and nut and separate the engine mounting insulator LH from the engine mounting bracket LH.

NOTICE:

Loosen the bolt while holding the nut in place.

(c) Remove the bolt, 2 nuts and No. 2 engine mounting stay RH.

(d) Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts and separate the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH from the front No. 1 engine mounting bracket LH.

(e) Remove the 6 bolts, 2 nuts, frame side rail plate sub-assembly RH and frame side rail plate sub-assembly LH from the front frame assembly and vehicle body.

(f) Remove the 6 bolts, 2 nuts, front suspension member bracket sub-assembly RH and front suspension member bracket sub-assembly LH from the front frame assembly and vehicle body.

(g) Operate the engine lifter and remove the engine assembly with transaxle from the vehicle.

NOTICE:

  • Make sure that the engine assembly with transaxle is clear of all wiring and hoses.
  • While lowering the engine assembly with transaxle from the vehicle, do not allow it to contact the vehicle.

47. INSTALL ENGINE HANGERS

(a) Install the No. 1 engine hanger and No. 2 engine hanger with the 4 bolts as shown in the illustration.

Torque:

33 N·m {337 kgf·cm, 24 ft·lbf}

(b) Using an engine sling device and engine lifter, secure the engine assembly with transaxle.

NOTICE:

  • Adjust the angle of the sling device carefully to prevent damage or deformation to the engine hangers or engine assembly.
  • Do not perform any procedures while the engine assembly is suspended because doing so may cause the engine assembly to drop, resulting in injury. However, the engine assembly needs to be suspended when it is installed to or removed from an engine stand.

48. REMOVE ENGINE WIRE

(a) Disconnect all clamps and connectors and remove the engine wire from the engine assembly with transaxle.

49. REMOVE NO. 2 VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE ASSEMBLY

50. REMOVE FRONT NO. 1 STABILIZER BRACKET LH

HINT:

Perform the same procedure as for the LH side.

52. REMOVE STEERING LINK ASSEMBLY

53. REMOVE FRONT FRAME ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the bolt and separate the front engine mounting insulator from the front engine mounting bracket.

(b) Remove the bolt and front frame assembly with the rear engine mounting insulator from the rear engine mounting bracket.

54. REMOVE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET

55. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY

58. REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY

59. INSTALL ENGINE ASSEMBLY TO ENGINE STAND

(a) Install the engine assembly to an engine stand.

60. REMOVE ENGINE HANGERS

(a) Remove the 4 bolts, No. 1 engine hanger and No. 2 engine hanger from the cylinder head sub-assembly and cylinder head LH.

61. REMOVE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR

HINT:

Perform this procedure only when replacement of the front engine mounting insulator is necessary.

(a) Remove the hole plug from the front frame assembly.

(b) Remove the 3 nuts and front engine mounting insulator from the front frame assembly.

62. REMOVE REAR ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR

HINT:

Perform this procedure only when replacement of the rear engine mounting insulator is necessary.

(a) Remove the 2 hole plugs from the front frame assembly.

(b) Remove the 4 nuts and rear engine mounting insulator from the front frame assembly.

63. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

HINT:

Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH is necessary.

(a) Disengage the clamp from the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH.

(b) Remove the bolt and separate the cooler bracket from the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH.

(c) Remove the bolt and separate the brake actuator with bracket from the engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH.

(d) Remove the nut, 2 bolts and engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH from the engine mounting spacer and vehicle body.

64. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING SPACER

HINT:

Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting spacer is necessary.

(a) Remove the 2 bolts and engine mounting spacer from the vehicle body.

65. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR LH

HINT:

Perform this procedure only when replacement of the engine mounting insulator LH is necessary.

(a) Remove the 5 bolts and engine mounting insulator LH from the vehicle body.
